Titanum Webcam Papiliorama

Hello everyone
In the Papiliorama in Kerzers (CH), two titanium worms will soon bloom. You can follow the flower live via webcam, the first one is just starting to open:

Hello Tobi,

thank you for the hint - I always like to follow something like that....

Very unusual that the two there have two titanum that blooms almost simultaneously; this is very rare; I know nothing of a simultaneous flowering of two tubers; in the Botanical Garden in Bonn, however, there was a 117 kg tuber in 2006 that drove 3 flowers.

Happy viewing, Bernhard.

Hello Tobi & Bernhard,

Thank you very much for the note on the livestream, I'll take a look at it right away.

It's crazy that the Bonn tuber has driven three flowers! I wouldn't have thought possible. Is it a genetic peculiarity or does this happen from time to time in such "ancient" specimens?

Regards
André

Hello Bernhard
The two plants also come from the same mother tuber (87kg) that the Papiliorama received from the Botanical Garden Basel in 2016. At that time, a flower was already expected, but the bud rots off and the tuber has then divided. The two tubers that are now blooming had 17 and 21kg. Since they are genetically identical, their "flower clock" will probably tick similarly :D
Enclosed are two more pictures (hope it works with the setting) which I made during my last visit to Papiliorama on 04.01.2020. I think these are the leaves of the two titans that are blooming right now. Would estimate the leaf height from pot top at about 2.7m. Mine are not yet that far :icon_lol:
Thank you for the link and best regards
Tobi

Hi André,

I think that in Bonn this was mainly due to the weight and then of course several (flower) buds have to develop; most tubers will bloom with a bud before they reach such a large weight.

Hi Tobi,

thanks for the pictures from a year ago - the big tubers rot, unfortunately happens again and again, eg in the Berggarten in Hanover:
Amorphophallus titanum in the Berggarten, Hannover and Amorphophallus titanum in the Berggarten, Hanover - the tuber is then completely rotten....

The fact that the two tubers are a clone, i.e. genetically identical, may well be the reason for the simultaneous flowering; amazing that the two bloom at a relatively low weight.

Happy growing, Bernhard.
