Was man sonst noch alles anbauen kann...

This spring I just put a little piece of ginger that was left in the kitchen in a pot. This grew reed-like to a height of 120 cm. That was the harvest, the rhizome probably doesn't cover an annual requirement yet, but maybe someone will make a free-range test next year...

Greetings
Michael

Hello Michael,

I recently sunk a curcuma rhizome... let's wait and see what's to harvest.... Curcuma, however, seems to be sensitive to dry air and possibly too late watering, because the plant has quickly received leaf edge necrosis; the new leaves look good again and I have to take better care when watering....

Happy growing, Bernhard.

Hello Bernhard,

Curcuma I had also potted, but what you described happened, the leaves turned yellow in a hurry and the harvest was only half of what I had planted. Too bad, because the size of Curcuma would be much more suitable for the apartment...

Greetings
Michael

Hello Michael
Ginger in the 'free' can take up quite a bit of space index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=6360 in addition, my ginger started to drive 4 new shoots in September, so I was glad to take him to a greenhouse where his bustle was notinterrupted. The 20 litre bucket will probably be too small next year! index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=6359

Klaus, your foliage looks much stronger than I did, ginger seems to need sun. For me, indoors, the yield was also "little economical", even if the pot was already on the verge of bursting and I therefore stuffed out.

Greetings
Michael

Hello Michael
It doesn't have to be the same variety either - there's sand by the sea

Hello Klaus,

I didn't know there were different varieties. Are they also different in taste?
I have Zingiber officinalis 'aldii'... Unfortunately, I do not know more about it.

Greetings
Michael

Hello Michael,

does not have to be called Zingiber officinalis 'hoferii' with you??? ;-)

Happy growing, Bernhard.

True, these are the problems of taxonomy in different countries, only wanted to remain comprehensible to the rest of the world...

Hello Klaus,
your ginger looks very much like a hedychium to me.

Hello Stinkmorchel
I only received the plant in exchange this year. The information was Zingiber officinale Wildling. Since my plant has not yet bloomed, I can't say if that's really the case.

So -- both Stinkmorchel and Michael are right. My "ginger officinale" is too big for a "kitchen ginger"
The flower approach clearly says Hedychium index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=7220 Which exactly do the flowers hopefully show.
Actually, I wanted to go on vacation for a few days ------------

Yes, very clearly Hedychium!
I'm curious to see what the flower looks like.

Cool.
To the turmeric:
Last year for fun in earth = crap, constant burns, yellow somehow unhealthy. Didn't know why.
This year in Seramis= Tipi topi. Only slight burns on some leaf edges, whether these are salt damage or was a bit too dry, I can not say. I suspect turmeric quickly gets damage in case of dryness. Fertilized with Wuxal 2ml/L. At first I used the Seramis fertilizer, but it is too weak.

Hello everyone
Now it is clear: It is the butterfly ginger (Hedichium gardnerianum) index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=7371 also Kahili ginger. I'll show a few ginger plants for size comparison index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=7372 from left to right: Kahili ginger -- Hedichium gardnerianum, Japanese ginger -- Zingiber myoga, Galant -- Alpinia galanga and cardamom -- Elettaria cardamomum. Unfortunately I still miss turmeric but there is a fascinating nursery at the Kaiserstuhl ---

Hello Klaus,

Curcuma-rhizomes could be bought, you can possibly still buy from us here at Edeka in the vegetable department; dirt cheap....
However, the leaves plant tend to dry from the edge; perhaps the humidity at the natural location is quite high; I keep her in the room at normal living humidity and there she always looks terrible.
This has already been described here above What else you can grow...

Happy growing, Bernhard.

My turmeric is I think from Lidl, which grows quite well and now drives foothills.
Room keeping, the photo is from August I think.
From time to time it gets yellow damaged areas on the edge of the leaf, I suspect if the substrate became too dry. Otherwise, as already mentioned in Seramis, it works great!
I recently removed a chilli plant and looked at the root growth in Seramis. Very good and uniform rooting of the whole substrate.

Hello Botanicus,

it clearly looks better than mine in unitary soil, which is quite dry thanks to my inattention, which is due to the location...; you probably have an advantage with Seramis.... Do you have a water level indicator in the pot?

Happy growing, Bernhard.

Not with the turmeric plant, with other partly. already. However, I no longer pay attention to the indicator but see from the color of the Serami whether water is necessary. If it is very light and the pot is light, it is poured.
Unfortunately, the indicators are not really reliable, or it is difficult to see if you have to dislocate your neck to see what the indicator says at the right angle in the shade of the plant.
There are 2 variants of the indicators, a white one for indoor = scrap at least in 100% Seramis.
And then there is a darker one for outdoor, this works at least for me and is only bought. Unfortunately, this is difficult to read due to the dark color.
But as I said, meanwhile I go by the color of the Serami.
