Arum creticum

Hello friends of Araceae,.

Yet an another Arum from my collection, the Arum here creticum. This beautiful plant is on Crete and in southwest Turkey.
The plant can assume stately proportions over time. I got the bulb two years ago, and this year, it shows a flower, which I find amazing yellow for the first time! The first photo with the foliage is from January 11, the shoot had begun in early winter, and the plant was in my cold greenhouse throughout the winter. Flower pictures are from the 7 April 2019.

Love greetings,
ADA

Well, you just have to dare . . . . . .
The pot with Arum creticum was slowly becoming too large and expansive for my winter stay in the cold house, so I planted this Arum in autumn in a bed in a free and sunny place. Little did we know that this winter we would get a long-lasting and very frosty winter period.
The lowest measured temperature here in my garden was minus 13 degrees.

So Arum creticum has had its endurance test, and look what it looks like - the first picture is from February 16th, it started with the northeast current and the frost, the second picture is from March 6th, at that time we had the strongest frost here, and now the third and fourth picture from the last days : the foliage is fresh green again, and I have already discovered four buds!

Best regards,
Ada

Hi Ada,

wow, that's really very impressive that the species puts away -13 °C - without me having googled with which USDA winter hardiness the indicated....

OK, have a quick look....
https://www.google.com/search?client=fir... m+creticum+USDA
depending on the page, the species is indicated once with USDA 6 (6a -23.3 °C; -20.5 °C, 6b -20.4 °C; -17.8 °C), but also with 8 to 10;
Ada, the Niederhein falls according to maps rather in USDA zone 8, so that Arum creticum should actually endure that ...

Great photos!

Happy growing, Bernhard.

Hi Ada,
I have been planting Arum creticum for many years and it has proven to be fully hardy here in WHZ 7b. Because of frost, there have never been failures, but by snails - they love them.

Regards

Ortwin

Fascinating, most of my collection gives up the ghost at +10°C...

I'm curious, I got an A. creticum delivered together with A. cyrenaicum, both sprout straight.
I still have to get soil and pots and repot them!

Just recently I got my 2nd Arum creticum delivered by Aroid.nl with flower attachment!
My first one from 2021 is kind of a bit puny, hence a 2nd plant and this time stronger plant!
My first one was a bit puny from the beginning, had only got 2-3 leaves, partly. yellow-spotted. Either my substrate needs to become even more "airy" or I should keep it more humid?!?!
