Hi Luke,

that can be found already; I have just one hewittii with seven leaves. One explanation is that the main growing tip has been damaged and thus more are made.

Can you then take that to multiply? So just damage the main stem, so that new ones?

Yes, you can do that, but it risks of course always the loss of the tuber by decay.
Under each new sheet is usually also a new independent tuber.

I forgot...

If you destroyed the main bud, the wound must dry naturally best well before you again pots the tuber; you could them instead of substrate also in humid Sphagnum continued and possibly even with activated carbon and / or deal with a fungicide to prevent the loss through decay...

I never did intentionally with one of my bulb...
