I would mix the ashes but rather in the substrate. If you want to compost the mixture after use, I would also the styrofoam out let (rather replace with perlite or sand).
Also, the Hornspäne will use anything as they decompose very slowly, and only in the course of the year to free nitrogen when the plant no longer needs him.
