Hi Phillip,

Thank you for the substrate instructions!

The natural site (swampy) the small pore volume of my substrate should be no problem.
I will repot now in the growing season but not yet in new substrate, but do it only in the winter, and try einaml it rhododendron substrate.

Happy growing, Bernhard.

Hello friends of Symplocarpus,.

Here pictures of the current Symplocarpus shoots in my garden:

index.php? page = attachment & attachmentID = 4615
Please mind you not on the snail grain, which is strategically important. A tip was already ate at the shoots.
This is one of Symplocarpus plants, which I have received as seedlings from England in 2013. My two other plants, which I received in the January 2018 from Holland, exorcise later, they are there but also underground, I had to look of course.
Love greetings,
ADA

Hello ADA,.
Thank you for the pictures. Very nice. But you exorcise not unusually early? I always thought that begin when shooting in the winter, and "melt" then through the snow cover...
Greetings Ralf

Interesting post.

Mine are also as far as that of ADA.
I.e. my backup in the pot has been so far. I took pond soil as substrate and with perlite a little "upgraded"
The other two are hopefully in the Moor area of my garden. After super are growing in the spring, they discovered the snails for up - Russ-k being eaten out. Have I have it end of November 2017 and have just planted the 2. The other just in case used in a pot. We BB´s gave Kahl frost with-25 degrees. Survived perfectly you.
Can't wait to BB´s spring.

Hi, Ralf and Hi Sonja,.
Thank you for your answers.
So, Ralf, the images of Symplocarpus pushes through the snow with generated its own heat well - know I only here in the West of Germany, with us in the Rhineland, is so rare times snow that Symplocarpus here without need to come out. Where there are many location shots which show the driving without snow.
And Sonja, thank you very much for your information, that Symplocarpus drives even with you. When you have pictures?
This clone shown now by me from the UK was always so early with the shoot, the two Dutch plants come later, as already written. I am always curious.
Our garden soil in which they are planted, is rather clayey, and I have mixed with Earth abundant peat humus, which was so advised by the sellers. They are very moist and modderig, but not wet, and in the water such as a pond, that was not to also advised me.

Love greetings,
ADA

Skunkcabbage fans,

After my little Symplocarpus were strongly chlorotic last year, I have decided to try a different substrate.

The current looked like: index.php? page = attachment & attachmentID = 4670 and bestannt from bog peat (not on limed) and 1/3 sound. The substrate had virtually no pore volume (more), and was also heavily compacted.

The new mixture consists of approx. 1/4 old substrate plus Hochmnoortorf and pine bark (7-15 mm): index.php? page = attachment & attachmentID = 4671

The plants by the way looked: index.php? page = attachment & attachmentID = 4669 I hope that you don't blame the repotting; I didn't think that the drive already.

How do you fertilize your plants?

Happy growing, Bernhard.

Hello Bernhard,
with my Symplocarpus I incorporated a handful of horn shavings into the planting hole when planting in the garden as fertilization. This is also recommended for pot keeping (but you are definitely already finished with the repotting . . . . . . Then there are also even finer-grained natural fertilizers, also with horn shavings, but also with guano and so on, of which you can then well incorporate something into the soil from above.
Mine are all in the garden because I have read that they are not suitable for pot cultivation in the long run, because they need a lot of root space. They are no longer fertilized there after growing, in the garden floor a lot of things happen by themselves.

Well, we will report and compare how our symplocarpus develop. And above all, we are certainly all waiting for the first flowers, who knows when any of us will finally experience this moment of happiness.
Greetings,
Ada

Skunk-Cabbage fans,

after it looked very good in the spring (see above), the condition of the plants is now again pitiful: index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=5263

I am perplexed and have no idea what is going wrong with me.
The only idea I would have is that the plants may need a fully shaded location; at the moment they are half-shady, so get sun from noon until afternoon.
I do not believe that this is the case, but there are contradictory recommendations:

Hi Bernard,

The plants in the picture are no different from what I had.
I don't know the cause, but I always thought that the growing season here is shorter than on the natural site because of the high heat sum, and therefore they are already preparing for the winter. I don't think the location should be shady.

The plant I had in the tub with water has kept green and fine all summer!!
I have always removed algae that swam around in the water by hand, and often gave a lot of water so that it flowed abundantly over the edge. On the Internet I found the statement that Symplocarpus wants to stand in running water.
Maybe worth a try?

Greeting Olvi

Hi Olvi,

thanks for the hint.
Since the species grows in swampy terrain, a large coaster or a tub in which there is always water would really be worth a try.
The current leaves will not recover, but next year I will try it out.

Happy growing, Bernhard.
