amorphophallus titanum multiplication by rhizome

Hello all,

I am kim a French newbie with amorphophallus.
I had buy a titanum tuber (10 cm of diameter). And i have a curious experience with this plant :

-The tuber make one leaf near one meter in the summer.
-Now, i have 3 more little leaf !
-Yesterday i unpot the tuber and i found that :

The bigger leaf, independent of the big tuber with roots.
The tuber is damaged but not rotten.
A white rhizome link the big tuber to the big leaf.

Do you think that this plant is a amorphophallus titanum ?
What can i do with the tuber and the leafs ?

best regards an thanks for help.

ps : many thanks to
mr.titanum.

The coloration of the petitole looks like A. titanum.

Do you have better pics ?

I think, Mr. Titanum will give you an answer, why the tuber builds more than 1 leave.

thanks,

But it is very strange, i had read that bulb division doesn't exist in titanum.

You can see the beginning of the rhizome on the tuber picture.

I don't know how to keep leafs without tuber and a big damaging tuber.

Normally, the tuber of A.titanum does not produces other tuber.

But in your case, it is normal.

Every tuber has a lot of "sleeing eyes" . It´s a backup for the plant. From every "sleeping eye" the plant can produce a new leave.

Your titanum tuber is damaged. thatswhy thy plant has build some new leaves. With a little bit of luck, you will have more than 1 tuber at the end of the saison.

The only choice you have, is to let the tuber in the soil. So you have the chance, that the plant will survive

Without the soil , the tuber wil die within 10 Days.

On your pictures i can´t see, how much of the tuber is damaged.

There can be a lot of resons.

- Wrong soil
- too much water
- too low temperature of the soil
- deseases

The 3 most important things for A. titanum are : the soil, the watering and the temperature.

Soil : it must be a well drained soil
temperature : Never let the soil cool out lower than 20 °C
Watering : The soil should be moist, but not wet.

Here we have a culture sheet of A.titanum for download. It´s made by botanical garden of Bonn :

Hi Kim,
Hello Stephan,

Stephan has explained what happened it already perfectly.
But really strange is the fact that the tuber grew a new and healthy leaf and additionally three small leafs; so the tuber must have been damaged somehow after the big leaf was grown and the original connection between the tuber and the big leaf was probably destroyed.
I do not understand the origin of the small leaves; if the main growing point with the big leaf was disturbed it would have been likely that dormant shoot/leafbuds on the tuber start to grow in order to replace the disturbed main shoot/leaf. But it is not clear from the pictures if the small leaves have been grown starting from the tuber.
If so they have obviously been detached from the tuber as well.

No idea, if this speculation describes what really happened.
But if so I guess it gives a strong indication that the substrate combined with the watering and maybe the (too low) temperature, as Stephan already wrote, caused the problem for the tuber.

The picture with the leaves in the pink pot shows a substrate that looks like very fine pure and degraded peat.
This is definitely not a good substrate; if watered too much it will be too wet and will not have enough pores with air and will not drain good.
It would be good to look for a coarse (white) peat based substrate and mix it with at least 1/3 perlite or pumice in order to get a very good drainage.

Does this pink pot have a hole in the bottom for drainage?

What were the temperatures when big leaf was grown?

If the tuber is not soft and has no rotting spots you might be lucky that it grows a new leaf, just keep it in a warm place potted in damp (not wet!) good draining substrate.

And Stephan is right, at the base of each leaf a new tuber will grow and so you might have 4 (small) tubers at the end of the story.

Good luck, Bernhard.

Hi Stephan, a Bernhard,

The pot have a hole, and i have some and i have 5cm of lava in the pot.
For the temperature the plant is in my kitchen, near a radiator, near a clear window.

I will add some perlite in the substrate.

thanks for all

kim

ps

do you know where i can buy a titanum tuber ?

Hy Kim,

in Winter it is better to use a heating mat under the pot.

Titanum tuber are very rare and expensive. It´s easier and cheaper to buy a seed from a guy from poland :
