i am a relative "newbie" in growing these wonderful amorphs.. over the last several years..im experimented with the best substrate to hold my dormant tropical amorphs.. mostly the giants..titanum,gigas,ds,and hewetii... i am having great success using the long new zealand spaghnum moss.. i clean up the tubers..soak spaghnum moss in water enhanced with kelp powder and kloning powder.. i keep the dormant tubers in a warm (around 30 C) with our without light.. the smaller ones spend very little tim...
i sure appreciate this forum..and the posts!! over here in USA.. my gigas, and hewettii (3 variations) are doing great as well.. i keep them in an indoor greenhouse. temps stay close to 25 C day and nite.. i havent monitored humidity..ive got to get a hygrometer.. lights are T5's and full spectrum LED fixtures.. i do like..and so do the plants.. like the LED lights.. all of my gigas are into 2nd leaf growth..a few are just starting 3rd growth.. i planted the gigas between.. oct 2014,and jan 2015 ...
i totally agree bernard!! when the company comes upon "hard to find" amorph seeds..they send out emails to us amorphs NUTS and offer us opportunity to add these to our collections.. i got email about the hewittii and niahensis seeds.. i ordered both.. ive bought from them twice now (not including this time) and they have speedily and safely shipped to me (provo utah,USA). they tell me they probably will have more (very limited) amorph species seeds in 2015.. yea for all of us !!! best wishes to ...
feeding our amorphs with coke?? wont they end up nervous .. eventually wanting strong coffee.. LOL
all my gigas and hewittii are germinated now.. its great seeing tiny white roots.with a coloured baby petiole popping out of the seed.. ?? once the petiole is up a cm or so..then you start fertilizing? currently with watering..i add kelp powder, and water soluable amino acids..
lord M.. most excellent.. great looking starts on your hewittii !!! my hewittii are also sprouting..with starts of 1st petioles.. i started mine in 10cm pots..3/4 fill with porus potting mix.topped with sphagnum moss..seeds covered with the moss just barely.. i like this new method im using..having great success with germination.
ive emailed this seller..and he bought a whole titanum seed head from locals in forests.. thats got to be ALOT Of seed.. i dont know the laws pertaining to collecting seed..and/or tubers.. im guessing none..or not enforced if there are.. i hope respect for collection of these wonderful plants..whether seed or tubers..will be taken in native lands..
i too have some of elberts amorph seed..both gigas and titanum question.. i was wondering what everyone finds to be the most successful in germinating these "tropical" giant seeds?? i am having success with 10 cm pots (orchid pots/with slits on sides) filled 1/2 full of well draining potting mix (i add kelp meal, fish bone meal, zeolite and minor elements grains) on top of this i use sphagnum moss (presoaked in water with kelp powder).place seed ontop then fill pot with premoisted sphagnum moss..i...
im grateful to all for there comments on successes with potting mixes.. i think over here in USA we have a similar thing or same to seramis.. its turface.. its a clay composite.. i dont use it as now..i dont have local source for quanities of it.. i can see the successes using it in amorph culture .. i would think more useful in small potted amorphs..not sure how big potted titanums would do.. ??? my current potting mix i use with my amorphs is 60% pine bark, 40 % pumice.. i add kelp meal,zeolit...
the amorph grower in new hampshire,USA.. lou ricciardiello specializes in titanums..i believe he is experimenting in his breeding program with various "strains" of titanums from many sources.. i have many of lou's titanums..they are great.. one of my larger ones has MONSTER sized leaves.. last year..the leaves were on average 12- 14 inches ( 30-35 cm) long..none of the others have leaves this size.. lou's greenhouse is winnipesaukee orchids you can see webpage www.winniorchids.com lou may be a g...
great to read so many comments from other titanum enthusiasts!! and your personal experiences growing titanum.. my larger titanums have all gone into dormancy now.. 1 was in vegetative growth for 14 months..wow.. the corms all did well..put on some more size.. i think since im not growing in a greenhouse..they dont get the "ideal conditions" that would allow them to double/triple in size.. but i think thats good.. ?? what would i do with a 150# ( 68 kg) corm.. lol this year..interestingly.. the ...
i need to gleen from you all.. i will be having many titanums, gigas, and hewettii's in leaf soon.. yea!! so of course..some are great, more plants is better..right?? LOL so thinking of trying leaf cuttings again.. last year..i used HUGE leaves..i think that..and my method was flawed.. leafs rotted.. the leaves were off my titanum with monster sized leaves..some were 13 inches ( 32 cm) long.. so..im thinking of using leaves from plants that are bit smaller.. and what medium to use.. last year i use...
great looking corm indeed!! ive got to do same with my uploaded pics.. :( ive been trying to upload them here with original file size..which of course is to large.. i'll have to spend some time doing so.. so i can show off some of my plants...
i wish more growers of "tropicals" here in USA !! much thanks to all over in europe!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and especially to us enthusiasts that want the "details" from the growers.. i glean much from all of you..much thanks i have 4 of my larger titanums back in vegetative growth..and 1 titanum that just wont go dormant..its 9 feet (270cm) tall..some leaves drying ..but firm petiole..its been going on 13 months now.. i hope the corm put on some nice size.. its like christmas when we unpot them and see h...
much thanks bernard .. im still probably 2 yrs from a flowering titanum..if im lucky.. so grateful for the commitment of botanical gardens/greenhouses that devote resources to growing our beloved amorphs !!! please do pass on to greenhouse staff/directors thanks from this american..for there efforts!!! im a few yrs away from putting up a warm greenhouse..large enough to grow "tropical" amorphs.. sigh.. not sure how sucessful i'll be getting my titanum, hewettii, gigas (no descus-silvae yet) to blo...
much thanks bernard for you postings on flowering titanums,or possible ones.. !!! i wish more in the USA grew the "tropical" ones.. from my observations/searches only a few of the big botanical gardens are keeping them..and then..mostly titanum..maybe i should write there curators and ask if i made a donation of the other "tropicals" they would grow them out to flowering..mm an idea.. again..much thanks to bernard!!!!!!!!!!!
bernhard.. always super to hear from you !!! yes..your 2 gigas are doing great..1 went lost the petiole.but is just starting to shoot one up the other is growing like crazy!! yea!!! petiole is about 2+inches (5cm) tall ..above the potting mix..and has vigorous root growth.. actually both have great root growth going.. keep me in mind if a descus-silvae is good to ship.. hint..hint.. as always.. thanks dave
the ebay offering from winniorchids of titanum seeds.. i know lou ricciadelli very well.. i have 3 seedlings from his seeds..and many medium/smallish corms from him.. hes a delightful ,very skilled grower of titanums.. in the USA.. i kid him from time to time..asking if he would start growing more gigas,descus-silvae.. he does grow some hewettii..i have 1 smallish hewettii of his.. my only source of the other 2 "tropical" amorphs are from europe.. much thanks to bernard!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but as for ...
i currently grow A.portodora, robodora, jacks giant, colocasia thai giant.i have large raised flower beds with heavy ammending of compost, peat, coco coir..they get planted right out in the beds..they get nearly full sun..they do well..i do keep them fairly well watered..one thing i know i need to do better at is fertilization..one yr i did fertilize heavy and all my EE's grew to monsters !! hopefully this yr i will remember to do same again..lol i think reason my EE's do well in full sun is i get t...
i too use fresh potting mix with new potting up of corms when they come out of dormancy.. and with that last seasons potting mix..i add to my compost, add to my flower/tropical plant beds.. i add alot of composted manure each fall..and spade it in..i just spade in the amorphophallus potting mix into all of this.. my potting mix for my amorphs uses about 20% pumice..so it adds some nice drainage to all my plant beds
